The Evening After
All the gear is cleaned and packed away neatly in the closet. I’ve taken my usual forty-five minute, scalding hot shower, and now I’m sitting down to tell you how our first tourney went, held at Friendly Fire Paintball. The days leading up to this have been extremely exciting, and somewhat nerve wracking. Will we get up there and get completely destroyed? Will our Ions be able to keep up with the competition? There were just so many questions that we couldn’t answer, and that’s what drove me crazy.
To get to the point, out of nine teams we placed 4th, and nobody can imagine how good that makes me feel right now. Yeah, it’s not first, second, or third even, but for us to just walk in there and do exactly what we wanted to accomplish just makes me feel great. Our very first game was against a team called JFK, and one of our friends plays for them, so we already knew that they were going to have one of the best chances to win.
We wanted to try something pretty crazy, so they want me to hit the X, which was oddly offset to the right tape. In an indoor field I guess it doesn’t really matter, but I over-slid it and I’m looking at least two guys right there in front of me. Somehow I was able to scamper back in; maybe it was just a total shock to them to see one of us doing something like that. Well I leaned up a bit and got rocked up side my head about a half dozen times, and they simply moved down field and slaughtered us.
Things just weren’t looking so hot. Anyways, we went on to win four games in a row, took a loss from the team that placed second, and finished off the phase with two more wins. The top four teams moved onto a four-team round robin. We lost to the 1st and 2nd place teams, but beat out the 4th place team for the second time in a row. Then we played one more round. The 1st and 2nd teams would then compete for, well, 1st and 2nd. The same goes for us and the 4th place team.
Well it came down to the final round, and we just fell apart, choked. I got laned for the first time all day going to the back left standup. JP, our third man, was shot out shortly after on the right 30 laydown. That left Dana at center home, another laydown, to fend of three guys. It’s not hard to guess how that turned out.
That’s just the basics of how the day went, and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of talk for the next couple days about this. I’m just glad that we did well; it gives us a good morale boost. I think I’ll draw up the field tomorrow and post it up for Tuesday, and I’ll try to cover some other various things that happened in greater detail. And be looking for pictures and video as well, there were a ton of cameras going so I’m hoping we’ll see some pretty soon!
