2006 PSP World Cup
Today marks the beginning of the first ever PSP World Cup that will actually feature teams from around the world, instead of just NXL teams. At Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, over 300 teams will compete for over $130,000 cash and prizes.
Teams in the Open Division will include many teams very familiar to the public like San Diego Dynasty, Baltimore Trauma, Boston Red Legion, and Sacramento XSV. Other lesser known teams like Ultimate and Las Vegas LTZ will also be competing in the Open Division.
Of particular interest to some is how the LA Ironmen will do. Since signing Ollie Lang, arguably one of the best paintball players in the world, the Ironmen haven’t had a chance to shine in the type of venue that the PSP World Cup provides, although their record so far in the season is rather impressive, holding a respectable third place behind Boston RL (1st) and the Philly Americans (2nd).
An intriguing addition this year will be the Masters Division, in which paintball players 40 years of age and older will compete. Guys like Bob Long and Robert Rose will show us young guys that they’ve still got what it takes to compete in a venue like Xball.
The field layout is interesting with what appears to be a weak dorito side and an exceptionally strong snake side. I’ll write up an in-depth field review later, after I’ve seen how some of the games have played out.
