2007 PSP LA Open Results

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Here are the results from the PSP LA Open, held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA last weekend. (Well, technically the 1st - 4th.) Teams from all over the place competed on six fields in the midst of a huge tradeshow, for over $100,000 in cash and prizes. Too bad I don’t live closer to some of these events or I’d be there. $5 a night for tickets, or $15 for the whole event.

A note on the rankings, the Ironmen finally pulled a big win. Looks like the additions of Nicky Cuba and Sean McDonald, along with the amazing Ollie Lang helped pull the Ironmen to the top. Congrats to all the teams that placed.

Outdoors vs. Indoors

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

I love playing paintball period. But there is a difference (duh!) between playing indoors and playing outdoors.

Indoors play is awesome, because it is all year round. However, there is always artificial turf (or dirt), which can be a bummer sometimes, especially when too thin or too oily. I play indoors a lot to work on technical skills like snapping and sliding, things that the close range of an indoor field can really help perfect.

Outdoors play is awesome too! Firstly, the feel of playing outdoors is just more… exhilarating. But the grass is nice, and the fact that most tournaments are held outdoors makes it a necessity to practice at outdoor fields. Also, on a larger field, communication becomes more important, and run-throughs become a lot more viable.

Either way, I think paintball is awesome, but I’m really pining for the warmer spring months so I can get out and play in the sun again.

More Paintball Team, Player, and Event News

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Here’s another run down on some upcoming teams and players for the 07 season.

Nicky Cuba, from what word on the street tells me, as well as an apparent publishing in Splat Magazine, has now signed with the Ironmen. This should make for a great year for them, especially with the Lang-Cuba match up.

Miami Raiders have a nice list of sponsors going already for 07, including First Endeavor Paintball, NXe, Custom Products, Advanced Paintball Electronics, Gen X Global, Spentpb.com, BonusBall King, PBDojo.com, Upfront paintball Sports, and Angry Paintball. Quite a list! They will also be switching to a private label FEP Quests, according to recent gossip.

The Quest

The Millennium Series has also launched a nice new website detailing all of their upcoming events. The one thing I like about the Millennium Series is the fact that teams from all over Europe come together to play. Here, the serious players may travel across the country, but really there’s not a great deal of difference from either side. But traveling from country to country would be sweet, just to see all the different people and places.

Anyways, that’s all for now.

2Die4 FightClub Barrel Cam

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

In a rather cool style, 2Die4 FightClub, a Euro paintball team, has put up footage of reball practice, as well as the ALB Cup, as taken with a barrel cam. The audio is bad, but the footage is sick. Much better than a goggle cam, there isn’t as much wobbliness to the camera. Anyway, here are two videos from reball practices and one from the Cup.

Team News: Ultimate, Hurricanes, and Glenn Taketmoto

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Here’s some quick and dirty team news, perhaps somewhat random.

Team Ultimate has signed a new sponsorship deal with Smart Parts and will be shooting Epiphany Ions. Who knows the reasoning behind this, you’d think they would just get a Shocker deal. Some people argue it’s because too many teams already have the Shockers, and others say that it’s a marketing deal trying to get other people to buy into the gun. It might be a little of both, but I wouldn’t complain. I hear they’re fast enough, so it’ll be interesting. Ultimate also picked up sponsorships from Nitro Duck, PMI, JT, and View Loader.

New England Hurricanes have picked up three new players for the 07 season: Greg “Buddy” Hinthorne from Infamous, Brian Gigliotti from Miami Raiders and Chris “Poo” Costigan from Jax Raiders. They will also be shooting 07 Egos with Halos while wearing custom Eclipse jerseys.

It’s going to be an interesting year for Hurricanes and hopefully a breakout for them. They’ve been so close the past few years, and one of these days they’re going to drill the competition. They deserve a good year in my opinion.

And Glenn Takemoto has signed with Infamous, which should make them an upcoming powerhouse now that XSV crashed and burned. Not real crazy about Infamous, but I like them better than XSV.

Avalanche Team Roster For 2007

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Here’s the 2007 season roster for one of my favorite teams – Avalanche! The only reason I had trouble finding this was because of their website? What’s up with that thing?

Avalanche

Avalanche -

Brandon Mayo
Danny Tiljak
Carl Markowski
Tyler Michaud
Brock Jolliff
Roger Henn
Adam Geis
Andy Horvath
Greg Pauley (head coach)

+ Avalanche X -

Danny Tiljak
Carl Markowski
Roger Henn
Tyler Michaud
Chris Sosine
Greg Sosine
Jake Whittaker
Ian Martin
Davey Simmons
Brock Jolliff
AJ Trillet

Anyways, I love Avalanche; they seem to be a pretty awesome crew. I think I really began to like them after their segment in Obscure Influence only because they had the best song on the DVD, and I still need that song! “Good For Something I think it was called. Ah, great song, seriously.

I hope they have a great breakout season this year as well. They deserve a good year, so my fingers are crossed.

NPPL Pro Teams for the ‘07 Season

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Already, there have been some interesting developments in the line-up of Pro Teams for the NPPL ‘07 Season. Here is a list of confirmed teams for ‘07:

Chicago Evil
DC Arsenal
Edmonton Impact
Ironmen
Jacksonville Raiders
Jersey Authority
Los Angeles Infamous
Miami Rage
New England Hurricanes
New York NRG
Oakland Blast
Pittsburgh All Americans
Portland Naughty Dogs
Sacramento Excessive Damage
San Diego Dynasty
St. Louis Avalanche
Stockholm Joy Division

Something I’d like to comment on is a new team on the list - Jersey Authority. They are the Arsenal A-Team that broke their affiliation with Arsenal and are now under the ownership of Ron Butler, who probably named the team after his field, Paintball Authority.

Another interesting tidbit is that the Nexus place on the list has yet to be filled in an “official” capacity. However, LTZ has almost certainly filled the spot.

Also, XSV is now Excessive Damage. What? In all likelihood this is because of the huge sponsorship problems they had last year, partially causing the huge exodus from their roster.

I look forward to the ‘07 season, and with all the switch-ups, it’ll be interesting to see if the already solid foundations of established teams will provide a huge advantage over the new blood.

Gridlock Picks Up 40 New Players

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Holy shenanigans Batman! Gridlock just picked up 40 new players for two of their D3 X-ball teams and one D2 X-ball team, as well as possibly moving players to their D1 team. Because Gridlock is amassing such an army, speculation is now running rampant on Gridlock’s plans to take over the world. The tryouts were held at Paintball Central Sports Park in Charlotte on three separate occasions, and players were advised to attend all three try-outs if they were really serious about making the team.

Anyway, this is a bold move by the Trauma/Gridlock camp, and should make for a damn interesting ‘07 season.

Team Ultimate’s Philosophy

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Team Ultimate has one of the greatest philosophies that I’ve seen for a pro team. It’s available in it’s original form @ Team Ultimate’s Site.

Ultimate Philosophy

Ted Wolfson opened both a Paintball field and a store to subsidize team expenses on the tournament circuit. A few years ago, Ted and a bunch of kids fell in love with the sport of Paintball after playing in the 5-man rookie division at World Cup. Even though Ultimate is now a national competition team in the Open class XBall division, they are fundamentally a youth group, which is an extension of Ted’s life long duty as a Christian. “I came from a deeply religious background and I was a youth group instructor, so I wanted to do it for the kids as part of our ministry. The kids are not all religious but I at least try to have a positive influence on them, he explains, “Our goal is to help the kids grow into young adults so that they can become positive examples within society. Personality and character are very important to Ted. There is no time to worry about kids getting into drugs or trouble. At the Chicago PSP this season, he was forced to make a decision regarding on half of the team. “I had to let a few people go. The were good players but they didn’t mesh well. I don’t want any superstars. I just want to go and win and do it right.

The changes within the roster started to show last winter. “They were followers rather than leaders. They are still good boys and I worry about what they are doing with Miami Effect and Infamous, but I will not tolerate a lack of respect towards the team or myself. My partner and I give everything we earn from the field store to the team; the kids never pay for paint or other expenses. To see the disrespect is hurtful and I fell that letting them go was the right thing to do because I don’t think that we would have progressed in the sport with them. The team chemistry was not there. Each player must be dependent upon the others because it’s not just about individual skill, but rather a team effort.

To fill the void that the players left, Ted pulled up younger talent from Ultimate Kids, their farm team. After skipping the North East Open, Ted brought in seven young guns to compete at Cup. Although none of the players had ever played a game of Open Class Paintball, Ultimate still performed at the same level of intensity, taking the Naughty Dogs into overtime. “I played everyone and they gave it everything they had. I can’t wait till next year.

Show some respect
One rule that the Ultimate roster must adhere to is respecting everyone. “I demand respect, asserts Ted. “The drugs and alcohol aren’t even a thought to my kids, but the respect issue is very important. It not only emphasizes our professional status but it’s a good value that the kids will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Cussing, cheating and bad grades are also strict rules, but the majority of the kids are in accelerated programs at school or even in college so Ted does not fret over their grades, which also makes the parents very happy.

Ultimate has two girls rostered; one is a sister to two of the boys on the team and the other came from Femme Fatales. There is no special treatment for the girls nor is there any disrespect. Both have been playing a while and know how to handle male aggression.

Life lessons are a big teaching from Ted. Being a Christian, he passes along his knowledge on how to deal with life’s little hurdles in the way that a Christian should. Parents are made aware ahead of time that while playing with Ultimate, Ted will attempt to instill positive morals into the kids via his religious teachings. “The religious part is played up a lot because it is everything to me. I’m not telling the players that they need to attend church, but I am using my religious background as a way to teach them life lessons. I do not alienate people if they are not Christians, but I do try to teach them how to have better morals and deal with difficult situations involving stress and anger.

Straight talk
Many of Ted’s teachings transcend Paintball. The kids on Ultimate learn how to be assertive and work hard to succeed in not only Paintball but also everyday life.

“Getting cheated on the field is the same as having someone lie to you in the workplace or trying to get ahead by doing the wrong thing. It doesn’t make it right for my guys to wipe a hit of to win a game. When you get mad in Paintball, are you going to yell at someone? Are you going to do that in the work place or with your wife? It’s just a game and they need to work things out and suck it up and play the game.

Parents do not have a problem with Ted’s teachings; they have developed a high level of trust in him because he has helped to shape their children in a positive way. When the kids are at a tournament, parents know and trust that Ted is always with them and overseeing their every move. “The parents really like the level of trust and in turn makes them want to be more involved with the team. I see a lot of kids whose parents are not involved with their lives and their relationship suffers because of it.

Like Doc, there is no monetary return for Ted. “Everything we make is put right back into the team. There are no financial gains. Emotionally there is a gain, but it might not be shown for a while. My reward would be for them to think back 20 years later and say, ‘I learned how to be a good man or woman because of the values that I learned from being on Team Ultimate.’ It’s just a game, it’s just Paintball, but life and working are for long time. The kids need to have enough self-esteem to do the right thing in everyday life.

Sometimes, the Paintball lifestyle can take hold and never let go. The romance of being on the road and playing at the top of the sport can create an ego so big that it can consume a person’s humanity. A player can get wrapped up in the excitement and fail to see the negative effects until they make so many mistakes that they hit rock bottom. It may take more than a coach or other players to lift the person back up – sometimes it may actually take a little divine intervention…

The Lastest on Team News for the 07 Season

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

With a new season just around the corner, Pro teams are out looking for players, dropping players, or simply just falling apart. There’s really just way too much to keep track of, but if you’re interested most of the latest information on player standings can be found right here.

The main highlight is that XSV is literally falling apart. I’m not even sure how many players they have anymore.

Dynasty might also be so desperate that they are actually hosting tryouts for the NXL season. Of course you must be special qualifications, like playing on a current D1 team, must be accomplished and experienced, etc. So don’t think you can just walk on.

Team Dynasty – The roster, as quoted from the Dynasty site.

Dynasty

Alex Fraige
Angel Fragoza
Brian Cole
Davey Williamson
Frank Connell
Justin Schwartz
Ryan Greenspan
Todd Martinez
Yosh Rau

A brief history of Team Dynasty is also posted up. I’d like to post that too, but it’s not my story. If there is one thing that I observed after viewing their site, no matter how much skill your team has, no matter how many sponsors you have, you’re still only going to be as strong as the bond between you and your teammates. Dynasty is built on long time friendships between their players. Ever since the late ’90s, they have literally left a dynasty on the paintball community as they swept series championship year after year, and will probably continue to do so for many years to come.

I really don’t care how bad you hate Dynasty, and you can say all you want about them, but what they have wasn’t simply given to them. Through their friendship and determination, they have managed to become the best of the best. I admire that, because no team will go anywhere without them.
