The Weekend

Friday, May 18th, 2007

We’ll be playing Saturday at Paintball Paradise, and the weather is looking excellent. It was getting hot there for awhile, but a nice cold front moved back in and pushed the temperatures down a little. So everything is looking good for now. I’ve never been to paradise, which is weird because it’s like the closest of all the fields around. I think it’s mainly because of some of the people there, so we’ll see how that goes on Saturday. I really hope they can get the X-ball field up as well, which is one of the only reasons to play there.

Paintball Paradise

Sunday Paradise is hosting a tournament; something like twenty teams have already entered? We’re not entering, but some friends will (and they will absolutely destroy everything). Hopefully I’ll be able to get some film or photos, because it should turn out to be a nice day as well.

School is practically done now. We go next week, and Wednesday and Thursday turn into half days because we’ll take two finals on each day. Luckily for me, I’m exempting all of Thursday so now I can start my summer vacation one day early. My hardest final will be Monday morning, and once that’s over everything is downhill from there.

I’m also going to be in the market for a new gat soon, maybe by early June if things work out. Still not sure what I’m looking at yet, but probably something used still. Shockers…Egos…maybe even Pm/Dms…like I said, still not sure, but I definitely want to get upped.

MobZor.com - Paintball’s Myspace?

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

Everyone knows that PBNation claims the web as the world’s largest paintball forum, but what about the world’s largest paintball social networking site? Myspace is nice, but a place specifically for paintball can do nothing but benefit the entire paintball community. It’s a great idea, and MobZor is taking some good steps in achieving their goal of creating a community that serves all of online ‘ballers needs.

That said, MobZor just isn’t large enough to be that community yet. With more public support, I have no doubt that it will become something with a lot more power within the paintball community. They also need to streamline several things. I think some steps toward a more customizable profile page would go a long way.

And despite how much they may enjoy (or cringe at) the comparison between their site and Myspace, I think that, while it is a legitimate comparison, they have plenty to differentiate themselves from the Myspace monster. Definitely worth checking out and signing up for.

The Ethics Of Paintball

The Ethics Of Paintball

Paintball houses an enormous crowd of players; woodsball to speedball, young and old, both male and female. Because of this, people need to know where to draw the line when they step onto a field, and this is a small list that can easily be expanded upon as more situations come to mind.

Friendly Fire Paintball, Bridgeport, Illinois

1. Never, under any circumstance, purposely bunker somebody new to the game. The idea is to make it a fun, enjoyable experience, not to inflict as much pain as you can on the person. If you do happen to accidentally come across a new player, then try your best to shoot them in the gun or legs where it’s not going to hurt them as bad. Neck and back shots suck, so don’t do it.

2. Young kids – paintball is becoming more and more popular among the younger people today, and you can find them at the field nearly every weekend. Most of the time they are there to play at their own pace, and that’s fine, respect it. If you’re in a game with them, instead of insulting them for hiding in the back try to encourage them to move up. Lead by example and they will quickly follow.

Many times you will catch them off guard as you come down the side of the field, but if you have a wide open shot don’t just put a rope on them – a few well places shots will suffice.

3. There are also times when you can treat the younger players as if they were on your own level. If you know for a fact that a kid plays a lot and knows the sport well, then feel free to take him on as an equal. He knows how the game is played, and realizes that bunkering and 20bps is all part of it.

Another situation might be the punk kid that likes trash talking you and your friends. I’ve never personally had a problem with this, but I hear people mention it all the time, and there’s no doubt you’ll come across one of these types eventually. If you do happen to face a little punk like this, the “right thing to do would be to just ignore it, and play on a different field. Buuuuuuut if this isn’t possible then I really don’t see any problem in giving him a few extra balls [evil smirk].

4. Wiping – let’s face it; nothing is going to stop it. If you blatantly catch somebody wiping and he doesn’t call himself out, or the ref doesn’t pull him, go ahead and bonus ball the crap out of him. Okay, okay, don’t overdo it; just make sure he gets the point, and maybe he’ll think twice before doing it again.

Sometimes it’s only a misunderstanding. I’ve had plenty of times when I get hit on the shoulder (especially when it’s colder and I wear more clothes) and I won’t even feel it. I’ll finish out the game, and then somebody from the other team will call me on it. Yeah, it makes you feel like an ass, but sometimes you really just don’t notice it. This is often the case when you hit somebody in the pack. If you know you hit somebody, don’t be afraid to call them on it; most of the time they’ll listen.

5. Don’t be a punk. As a paintball community we need to learn to have some respect for the other styles of play. Speedballers think they’re better because they have faster guns and more technical skills whereas woodsballers/recballers think speedballers are freaking retarded for spending $2,000 on equipment just to play paintball. Whatever your opinions may be, we really don’t care to hear them. Let the other side play as they will, don’t trash talk others at the field, and let things be as they were.

6. And finally, never forget the one reason why you love the sport of paintball so much, the one reason why you started in the first place. I know it’s not for the money, because paintball is impossible to make a living at. So next time things are heating up on the field between you and another player or team, ask yourself exactly what you’re doing. Is it really worth getting kicked out of the field, tournament, or whatever it may be? Is it really worth the fight?

For me, it’s all about the thrill and the fun. I’m also extremely competitive, but I’m not going to extremes to make sure I win; I couldn’t live with myself. Instead, I’d rather lose fair and square, and then work on the areas I that need improvement so when I do come back and win it’ll mean so much more than if I just took the shortcut. Maybe that’s just me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Eye Tactical CM110

Heeheehee. That’s what I said when I saw this goofy looking mask/helmet thing. But then their specifications on the site made a believer out of me. If you are really, really worried about your safety on the paintball field, fear no more with these.

Because check out the ballistics tests they’ve run on ‘em.

Firearm:
Remington Model 1187, Semi-Automatic, .12 gauge, 28″ Barrel, Modified Choke

Ammunition:
Heavy Load .12 gauge 1 1/4 OUNCE #6 Lead Shot

Velocity:
400m/s +/- (1312ft/s +/-) at 10 meters (32.8 feet)

Result:
No penetration to Lens

*stunned silence*

These are used by military and police forces in non-lethal weapon training scenarios. Pretty badass, I hope they’re comfortable.

Paintball In The Media - You Know Why

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Well, it’s just the usual story. This time it’s a dude just shooting at random pedestrians from a truck rather than vandalizing some building.

ALBUQUERQUE — An alleged drive-by shooter was arrested Sunday after an officer spotted him firing at pedestrians with a paintball gun, Albuquerque police reported.

“That’s putting other people in danger whether it’s causing stress to someone, causing them to fear for their life, causing them to have a heart attack,â€? Albuquerque Police Department Officer Trish Hoffman said. “All those are factors.”

On Sunday morning, Ernest Jerry Molina is accused of taking those factors for granted while shooting at people from his truck at Central Avenue and Washington Street. An officer reported witnessing the shooting. Molina was thrown in jail, charged with propulsion of missiles.

“The problem with this is the guns look very similar and almost exactly to a regular weapon, Hoffman said.

Even up close a paintball gun does appear to be a deadly weapon, and it shoots like one.
That’s why it’s taken so seriously by paintball gamers and game centers. A paintball bullet can cause serious injury if hit hard enough and in a vulnerable place.

“If they’re shot in the eye, it will take out an eye it could take an eye out.” Conrad Morawski of Hinkle Family Fun Center said. “If they get shot in the head at 400 feet per second there’s a possibility for brain damage.”

In rare cases, death can even result.

Morawski said that’s why shooting someone unaware of your intentions is a bad idea…

Proper gear needs to be worn, and all players should be up for a paintball shootout.

There are several paintball parks in the area, to play safely.

Molina, who reportedly admitted his actions, is out on bond and id expected in court Tuesday.
No one was hurt in the incident.

What alarmed me was the fact that they really didn’t stress what a paintball could do to the eye. They make it sound as if that’s only a rare case or something. Let’s see, projectile traveling 300fps and impacting a delicate organ…the result isn’t going to be very nice. My uncle is an optometrist, and he has treated a few patients with paintball injuries to the eye. “Blinded for the rest of their life unless they want to pay for a half-million dollar surgery that may or may not get any results.

I just don’t think the police get it. I mean…losing an eye completely changes your life, and yet these people that do these things still seem to get away with little punishment. Enforcement on this issue definitely needs to be stepped up.

Prepare For IMPACT - Paintball’s Hottest Team

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Wait, who?! Yeah, that’s what I was thinking, too.

Edmonton Impact forced their way into the professional spotlight at NPPL Huntington Beach when they battled for first place with Oakland Blast. Though they only placed second amidst teams such as Dynasty, Joy, Ironmen and many others from the Pro Division, they were determined to stick around.

Just over the weekend they proved that maybe it wasn’t just beginners luck. After two days of intense paintball at NPPL Tampa, they found themselves competing once again for first place on Sunday. The outlook was promising when they took the first win against Dynasty, but they lost the second two games of the set, leaving them with another second place finish.

Impact

A solid performance in my opinion, and I hope that they can keep up the hard work. It’s good for the industry - new teams coming in giving the usual Pros a run for their money. It definitely mixes things up a bit, and keeps all the teams on their top level of game, because that’s what it takes today. Without constant drilling and practicing, the old powerhouses will fall behind in way of the hungry ones like Impact and Oakland Blast.

And that’s exactly what I like about the sport; anything can happen. Yeah, you’ll have the upsets in the NBA, NFL and etc. but not like it is in paintball. It’s such a team oriented sport, and when played right the game turns into an extremely intricate machine. If one man fails to do his job then the machine fails, the team loses. Perhaps an essential part is replaced by another, but this new part just doesn’t quite meld like the old one did, and again the machine doesn’t run at maximum efficiency. This is one problem many teams face when they can’t seem to hang on to any of their players, because they are constantly leaving for more stable teams. Team Ultimate is just one of the many that come to mind.

Some sports have just become too commercialized I think. The “pros whine when they don’t get paid $30,000,000 a year, lose meaning of the sport, and often times a player can “make the team great. In basketball, give it to the guy who shoots the threes. Once he has the ball he can do the rest all on his own. In paintball, “Hey Ollie, run downfield and shoot five guys out for us. Just tell us when you need us. It just doesn’t work like that; Ollie isn’t anything without his team, and yet he is that one essential piece that makes Ironmen (and Dynasty) successful.

So Edmonton Impact returns to Canada with a lot of hope after this weekend. The pressure is on. Can they prove themselves worthy of the Pros, or was it just a long…and very complex streak of…continuous luck? I’d think not, and I’m ready to see them kick some more ass. Mad props to IMPACT!

More about the team…

PSP Offers New Divisions for Chicago Open

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Paintball Sports Promotions is now happy to offer even more great divisions for the 2007 Chicago Open. The event will be held June 20th-24th at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Center in Bolingbrook, IL.

Teams that cannot miss that extra day of work or school, but cannot bear the thought of missing one of the biggest events of the year now have an option to play in the D3 and D4 5-man Saturday-Sunday divisions. Teams registered in this division will have all of their preliminary games scheduled to be played on Saturday morning. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will then follow Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Entry fee for these divisions are $1400 for D3 and $1200 for D4.

D2 5-man has also been added to the list of divisions at the Chicago Open. This is the only 5-man division that is open to players that are also playing XBall at the event. Preliminaries will be played on Saturday with quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals to follow into Sunday. Entry fee for this division is $1500.

Registration for D2 5-man will remain open until Friday, June 22nd for those teams that just can’t get enough play time. Please note that while the D2 5-man preliminary round will not conflict with XBall, it is possible for later rounds of D2 5-man to overlap with XBall finals. No adjustments or refunds will be made for conflicting schedules resulting from players playing both XBall and D2 5-man.

For classification purposes D2 5-man at the Chicago Open will count as a D3 event. No NXL players will be admitted to this division.

Registration for the 2007 Chicago Open will open at www.pspevents.com on Wednesday, May 9th. Entry fees will be as follows:

Open Xball - $2750
D2 Xball - $2500
D3 Xball - $2400
D2 5-man - $1500
D3 5-man - $1200
Sat/Sun session - $1400
D4 5-man - $1000

Paintball Sports Promotions – Advancing the SPORT of Paintball

In an interesting move, PSP will now offer several new divisions of play for their Chicago Open. I fail to see the reasoning behind it. The D2 of 5-Man play will be a good addition, spreading the field a little for fairer play, but honestly, I doubt it will attract many more teams.

On the other hand, the Sat./Sun. 5-Man Division have many teams willing to play that. Probably can entice many more teams willing to make it a purely weekend thing. So, it looks like a mixed bag for PSP this time around.

The Week’s Forecast

Monday, May 14th, 2007

I hope everybody’s weekend was enjoyable as mine. We had great weather, a nice Mother’s Day, and not much to do except sit around and watch NPPL Live all Saturday and Sunday. Well, I watched a fair amount anyways.

For this week’s forecast…

School is winding down, and finals will begin Friday. We still have one AP test to take, and maybe a few regular tests for classes, but nothing big.

We’re planning on getting everyone out on Saturday to play, and this will be my first time out in months (I’ll be so rusty). I’m not sure where we’re going exactly, but most likely Paintball Paradise.

On Sunday, Paintball Paradise is hosting a 3 Man Open, and it sounds like there’ll be plenty of teams there. We’re not going to enter, but friends from JFK will, and they shouldn’t have any trouble dominating it. Maybe this will give me a chance to take some photos outdoors.

That’s the outlook for now. Let’s just hope the weather stays nice, and everything goes according to plan.

NPPL LIVE!

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Wow, I’m watching NPPL right now on the website that Dana pointed out. It’s pretty sweet. Looks like the games will be closing out pretty soon, but there’s going to be plenty more tomorrow and Sunday. Here’s the schedule, just tune in during those times to watch your favorite teams, I know I will be!

Be warned though, the British announcer only knows how to say “Absolutely! and “Definitely! It’s already getting on my nerves after fifteen minutes.

Hah, and who knows what you’ll learn. So apparently Johnny Perchak developed a fear of flying after who knows how many miles around the world he had already gone. So he ended up driving to the events, but that got old? I don’t know, a guy bumped up field and interrupted the story. Oh well - awesome site, tune in!

NPPL Tampa - May 11th - 13th

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Well, the next major NPPL event is here! I can tell everyone is probably still recovering from MAO, but Tampa is gonna be sweet! Featuring all the major teams and sponsors, this event and trade show is gonna be huge! And of course, one of my favorite features is the live webcast that they do for all of the center court games.

Watch every game played on NPPL’s Center Court live and for free from www.NPPLLive.com during the May 11 - 13 NPPL Tampa event!

All day Friday, Saturday and Sunday every game played on Center Court will be filmed by 4 cameras and covered by a full production team! The host will once again be accompanied by your favorite players and industry leaders through out the weekend as they give you all the play by play action and inside industry scoops live from the tower. In addition to all of this you can even interact with the host and his guests by emailing in questions for them to answer on the air!

Again, all of this is FREE to you all weekend LIVE through www.NPPLLive.com.

I’m Ready

Friday, May 11th, 2007

So it finally hit me again, and I’m ready to play now. It was weird. After going for so long about just not caring to play paintball at all, then all of a sudden that craving hit right in the middle of an essay I was doing.

I don’t know; it was part burnout, part school. School lately has been freaking chaos. SATS, AP Exams to take, finals are coming up, end of year projects, essays, presentations - everything is happening at once. And so after a week of this I just felt like chilling out and doing absolutely nothing. But I’m ready again; ready to get out and do some killin’ (at least try to).

Summer is here in two weeks and I plan on working quite a bit to pack away some cash. I’ll probably look to upgrade by the end of summer, but I haven’t decided on anything just yet.

Another Bash on Paintball - This Time Terrorism

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Found another bash on paintball, this time with solid proof that it is used to do terrible things.

THE MODERN FACE OF TERRORISM….Federal authorities have arrested six men who were plotting to kill American soldiers at Ft. Dix in New Jersey. From the Washington Post:
Charging document filed in federal court in Camden yesterday portray an ambitious and cold-blooded — but somewhat bungling — cadre who hoped to kill at least 100 soldiers, but also dropped training videos off at a local store to be copied, and spoke openly to a Philadelphia police sergeant about obtaining maps of Fort Dix.

….In March of 2006, an FBI informant established a relationship with one of the men believed to be in the videotape….The informants convinced members of the group that they could help them obtain automatic weapons to use in their attacks.

….Their training regimen included playing paintball, the documents say.
Let me get this straight: these guys dropped off jihad videos at a local store, talked to Philly cops about getting a map of Ft. Dix, were still trying to procure weapons after 17 months of planning, and practiced for the attack by playing paintball.

So maybe they were really dumb and got caught, but that doesn’t help our image! Now people can associate paintball with violence, terrorism. And that’s what the people will see. Most will make conclusions that paintball is promoting this crap, when instead terrorists are just using IT to do whatever it that they do. Basically, if it wasn’t paintball, then it would be something else. For all we know, these morons would be using airsoft…or nerf…

It’s never going to end.

Top Ten Most Awkward Places to Play Paintball

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Despite our constant cravings, Evan and I can’t typically just drop whatever we’re doing and play paintball. However, it would be damn cool if we could. The only problem is, sometimes I get the craving to play in some places where things might get a little awkward. (Be sure to read the captions by hovering your mouse over the pictures…)

10) In a restaurant. Despite some restaurants claiming to be fun for the whole family, sometimes they just aren’t accommodating enough.

Hooters - Suffering from a lack of paintball since 1983.

9) A public bathroom. Sure the stalls are a b****, but some bathrooms scream to be played in.

Stalls make good bunkers. Just don't bunker the old man with sitting on the crapper.

8) Underwater. Admittedly, this poses some problems, such as what would one use for jerseys, and how would the water affect walking the trigger.

Underwater paintball - a dream for the future.

7) On a space walk. On my recent journey into space, I took a space walk. And I though to myself, how funny would it be if right now, someone just popped out of that shuttle and started blasting me with a Tippmann 98 (the only gun that will function anywhere) and I floated off into space? Pretty damn funny.

It's all fun and games until someone is lost to the vacuum.

6) In a china shop. You ever get those urges where you just wanna destroy s***, like you’re freakin’ Godzilla? Yeah, me too.

It's GODZILLA!!!!

5) Church. Not that paintballers ever go to church, the heathenish lot that we are (only joking Proud Christian Paintballers!), but sometimes those sermons really get a man fired up. The preacher is shouting from the pulpit, spittle flying into the splash zone in the first three rows, and absolutely swept up in the fervor, you just want to stand up and say, “Game starts in three!”

Paintbaaaaalllll!!!!!

4) So you’re busy *ahem* bunkering your significant other in bed, when suddenly, the craving hits. Do you give in and grab your gun and ‘balls? Or do you just settle for uhh… whatever else it is that’s done in bed.

Know what'd look good on this bed? You. Know what'd look good on you? Me. Know what'd be even better? Paintball.

3) Trapeze paintball. Best idea since Potato Sack Paintball.

Okay, so let me get this straight. You want me, to go up there, with a paintball gun? What are we supposed to use as bunkers? Do you think I'm dumb?

2) Skydiving paintball. Best idea since Trapeze Paintball. In Sam’s wise, wise words: “It would be like impossible and f***in hilarious trying to watch ppl shoot each other.” I agree Sam. I agree.

At least the likelihood of having to reload is lessened by the fact that you won't be able to shoot anyone anyway. *stare*

1) In the middle of a nudist leper colony. Oh!!!! You totally just imagined that! I got you good, bwahahaha! But seriously.

Awkward!

Sideline Coaching

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Sideline coaching is something that’s been a part of professional paintball for a while now, the allowance of coaches to stand on the sideline and tell their players about the situation on the field. In the PSP leagues, this is still a common practice, but is NOT allowed in the NPPL.

I really, really, really dislike it. It is entirely unnecessary. No other sport has any type of coaching similar at all to it. The closest thing I can think of is baseball, and that’s still not as interfering as the coaching in paintball. Paintballers shouldn’t rely on the crutch of sideline coaching. We should just let the players play the game, without aid from coaches. I’d like to hear some other opinions on this, so if you’ve got one, let me hear it!

Online Paintball Galleries

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

So I love photography even though I’m not exactly serious about it. But I love it anyways. So as I was browsing through some galleries of the MAO tourney, I decided to start compiling a list of paintball photography sites. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far, but there will be plenty more to add.

http://www.pb2x.com/2007/photogaller…lanticopen_07/
www.choppapb.com
www.pbstar.com
www.shanerice.com
www.southsideimages.com
www.desiderataproductions.com
www.drewbietron.com
www.miguelcruz.com
www.meaganfosterphoto.com
http://www.breakoutphotos.com/paintball/
http://www.mattdphoto.com/gallery/paintball

My favorite is still Matt Dawson at the last link listed. It’s simply brilliant, and I can only hope that I can manage to do what he does someday. Anyways, I’ll keep looking for more to post in the future.
